Two of the cheapest pharmacies in America are Walmart and Costco. But which one actually saves you more?
We compared prices on 50 of the most common prescriptions. The results were more interesting than we expected.
Walmart wins on basic generics.
Their $4 generic list is hard to beat. If your medications are common generics (metformin, lisinopril, amlodipine), Walmart is tough to top. No membership required, prices are posted publicly, and they're everywhere.
Costco wins on brand-name and specialty drugs.
Here's where it gets interesting. Costco's pharmacy markup is capped by company policy at 15% over cost. Most pharmacies mark up 40-100%. On a $300 brand-name drug, that difference adds up fast.
And here's the part people miss: you do not need a Costco membership to use their pharmacy. State laws in most places require them to serve non-members at the pharmacy counter.
The bottom line:
We broke down the full comparison with a price table and decision guide.
