Generic substitution law Verified 2026-05-23

Louisiana permits but does not mandate generic substitution. Under La. R.S. § 37:1241, a pharmacist may substitute a less expensive therapeutically equivalent drug unless the prescriber has indicated "dispense as written" or "medically necessary" on the prescription. The substitute must be FDA AB-rated. Patient consent is required.

Medicaid formulary access Verified 2026-05-23

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) maintains the Louisiana Medicaid Preferred Drug List. Most Healthy Louisiana members are enrolled in managed-care plans (AmeriHealth Caritas, Healthy Blue, Humana Healthy Horizons, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan), which follow the unified PDL. Non-preferred drugs require prior authorization.
